Scoliosis Screening

SCOLIOSIS SCREENING

PA School law requires a screening of students in grades six and seven for scoliosis.  Sixth grade students are screened during the required physical exam.  The West Middlesex Health Services staff (School Nurses) will conduct a scoliosis screening for 6th grade students who have no record of a physical exam & 7th  grade students in April of each year.

The purpose of the screening is to detect possible curvature of the spine.  If the condition is detected early and the appropriate treatment secured, spinal deformity may be prevented.

The screening is very simple and can be performed in less than a minute.  Nurses will check the student's back while he/she is standing and bending over.  You will be contacted if there is any reason to have your child examined by your family doctor or a specialist.  To assure a good view of the spine, we request that the student expose his/her back.  It is recommended that boys wear a shirt that can easily be removed.  Girls should wear a shirt or tee shirt over a bra or sports bra and the shirt will need removed.  Boys and girls will be examined at different times in the health room.

If you have any objection to having your son/daughter participate in the screening program, please send a letter of objection in writing by March 31st.  Any student who is NOT examined at school MUST bring a written report from the examining physician.  Those students who are already under the care of a physician for scoliosis do not need to be examined during the screening.  Please inform the school nurse of this and provide details and the physician's name.

Thank you for your cooperation.
